Unit 1. Digital cameras and the digital world

We unlock the mysteries of the digital camera, what it is, what it does and the digital image it creates. It is discovery time, taking a look at your camera and getting familiar with the buttons, menus and controls, where they are and what they do. It is time to get a feel for the equipment you will be working with, how it all fits together, what to use when and how it responds in different situations.

Unit 2. Mastering exposure
Outside time and we explore what are the effects in difference of shutter speeds and aperture settings have on the outcome of your images. We will have you freezing the action, blurring the movement, panning or creating depth of field in your images with ease. You will be “in control” of your camera and loving it!

Unit 3. ISO and low light photography
Discover the shutter speed/aperture/ISO triangle as we teach you how best to work in low light situations. Understand why the camera sees things differently to the human eye, how to read histograms, and make accurate exposure adjustments in the heat of the moment.

Unit 4. Exploring colour and white balance
Light comes in a whole gamut of different colours. We need to understand it, learn how to work with it and use it to our advantage. This unit introduces the white balance feature on your camera and we dip our toes into the water with some portrait photography.

Unit 5. Image composition
Time to have some fun. In this unit we explore how to creatively put together a great image, blending foregrounds with backgrounds, the rule of thirds, reflections, lines, curves and all the elements you can use to make your image a stand out. We show you techniques to help avoid common problems and work in challenging situations.

Unit 6. Adobe Photoshop I
Meet your new best friend! See for yourself the benefits of capturing your images in RAW as you learn how to process RAW files. This is powerful stuff every photographer needs to know. The skills you learn here could just “save the day” when you need it most. The power of this software is immense. Learning how to use it properly is a must. Through your unit workbook and a series of instructional videos, we show you how to work with layers in Photoshop, apply filters, make colour corrections and a few other tricks to make your images pop!

Unit 7. Nature, travel, and other genres of Photography
Where do your talents lay? In this unit we try out a few photography specialties including travel photography, nature and wildlife, architecture, urban and street photography, night photography, food and macro photography.

Unit 8. Portrait, wedding, and event photography
If you like working with people, you will love this unit. We dive into studios & portrait photography, weddings and fashion photography, sports and event photography, some photo journalism, a little real estate photography, HDR images and a quick look at the advertising and product photography arenas.

Unit 12. Developing your portfolio
This last unit of your course is probably the most important. It is where you put together the best of your work and create that all important “portfolio”. It is your time to shine. Show off you new found skills, and give yourself a well earned pat on the back. You have done it!

ELECTIVES

Elective 1. Adobe Photoshop 2
In this unit, we are making detailed adjustments to images. There is no other program that can do this quite as well. Master using lasso tools and selectors, healing brushes, clone brushes and patches to retouch images. Yes, we show you how to cure acne, fatten lips, whiten teeth, liquefy faces and straighten noses all from inside your computer. Taking layers to the next level, you will learn how to use split toning, create effects and emboss watermarks. Watch demonstration videos of every technique as you work through the unit workbook.

Elective 2.  Adobe Lightroom I
The weapon of choice for modern day photographers. Once you know what you are doing, Adobe® Lightroom is an image cataloging and editing system that is a both a dream to use and a massive time-saver. In this unit you will learn how to set Lightroom Classic up on your computer and develop workflows that will have you processing your images like there is no tomorrow with accuracy and purpose. Unit includes a module booklet and videos demonstrating each technique.

Elective 3.  Adobe Lightroom II
Part 2 of our Adobe Lightroom units introduces you to the wonderful world of presets. This unit is worth doing just for this one element. We also master filters, adjustment brushes and retouching techniques, split toning and selective colour effects. Every technique in this unit also is backup up with a demonstration videos for those who finds visual learning easier.

Elective 4. The Business of Photography
Business names, web sites, copyright, legal stuff, accounting and cash flow, sustainable pricing, BAS returns, budgets, safe work practices, advertising and contracts. All the things we don’t like to think about but must know to run a successful, sustainable photography business that will give you the income and lifestyle you crave. If you are considering starting your own photography business, this unit is a “must do”.

13.  The History of Photography

A timeline of the world of photography plus a little bit more. We investigate the contribution some individuals have had along the way and how some images have impacted on the world as we know it today. You cannot help but be surprised and perhaps a little impressed as we look at where some of the innovators and also the rebels have taken photography. This unit is full of surprises, reflections and intrigue as we realise the impact a single powerful image can have on the world.

14.  Creating Inspired Images
Learning to look at the world through the eyes of the camera, to process what you are looking at in a whole new light. This unit is a huge step in taking your photography to the next level. Every image should “tell a story”. To do this well, it must capture the ambiance and mood of the scene and compel the viewer to take a second look.

15.  Photography Advanced Techniques
Are you up for a challenge? Learn to think differently and problem solve as you go. We tackle the awesome effect of high speed impact photography and give smoke photography and water droplet photography a splash. Indulge your creativity and sense of fun with a little forced perspective photography. Venture into the darkness and capture some star trails or do a little light painting. To balance it out, discover the beautiful calming effect of bokeh photography.
